Topics 2013

Pool topics for 2013  are tabled on the 2013-TOPICS web page; Supervisors are listed in alphabetical order.

So that you can 'hit the ground running' in the semester in which you do Unit A, you need to register a topic and supervisor by the end of previous semester.

NOTE that you are only required to register a broad topic area and a supervisor, e.g., 'DSP Algorithms to extract TAB notation from guitar music, with Professor R. Clapton', and you can always change it. The task of background review, formulation of research questions and detailed research plan are what you do in the first semester unit A.

Think about the lecturers you have had and whether or not you would like to work with them. Think about what you would like to study; perhaps some project from your work or subject you would like to learn more about. Talk to prospective supervisors about possible topics. You can even do projects with external supervisors, e.g., Physics, NICTA, CSIRO, SIT, your work, etc., BUT you must also have an (administrative) EIE academic supervisor. Note also that the Department does NOT demand payment from an external supervisor, neither does it pay external supervisors. A good place to start is IEEE Xplore (via SU Library) (IEEE Xplore 2.0 User Guide).

To register a topic, fill out Topic Registration form, get your supervisor(s) to sign it, and hand it in to the Level 4 EIE Office.

To help there is a staff Expertise Database, listing various areas and the staff interested in them.

You can also look at the previous year topics (linked from the left menu) to get ideas about topics and supervisors.
