BE/BCom enrolments

The rules covering the BCom degree have again changed in 2011 and the BE/BCom combined degree have also been affected. Core units have been relaxed. There are transition arrangements for those students who enrolled prior to 2011. Please consult the faculty of Business (yes Economics has moved to the faculty of Arts!).

Students first enrolled in 2011

Such students are required to operate under the new rules, and:

  1. Must complete a total of at least 240 credit points.
  2. Must complete at least 96 credit points of Commerce units (minimum of 48 at senior level, i.e. level 2/3) and at least 144 credit points of Engineering units.
  3. Must complete ACCT1005, ECOF1003, ECOF1004, ECON1001, and ECOF3010. ECOF3010 must be done in the final year of studies (and is not on the books in 2011 presumably because nobody should be in final year under the new arrangement yet).
  4. Should not attempt ECMT1010 because it is prohibited with MATH1005 Statistics which is now a core requirement for all BE students. ECMT1010 can be replaced with another 6 credit points of Commerce.
  5. Must complete a Commerce major (minimum of 36 senior credit points). Consult the handbook from the faculty of Business for the details.

Students first enrolled in 2006-2010

Such students may choose to operate under the old rules. Under the old rules, they:

  1. Must complete a total of at least 240 credit points.
  2. Must complete at least 96 credit points of Commerce units (minimum of 48 at senior level) and at least 144 credit points of Engineering units.
  3. Must complete ACCT1001, ACCT1002, ECON1001, ECON1002, INFS1000 and ECOF3001.
  4. Should not attempt ECMT1010 because it is prohibited with MATH1005 Statistics which is now a core requirement for all BE students. ECMT1010 can be replaced with another 6 credit points of Commerce.
  5. Must complete a Commerce major (minimum of 36 senior credit points) or advanced major (minimum of 48 senior credit points). Consult the handbook from the faculty of Business and Economics for the details.

Students first enrolled prior to 2006

They need not do the new core unit ECOF3001 and can choose to operate under the old definitions of Commerce major or double major.

Students first enrolled prior to 2003

Such students may choose to operate under the old rules or the new rules. Under the old rules, they:

  1. Must complete a total of at least 240 credit points.
  2. Must complete at least 80 credit points of Commerce units (no more than 48 at Junior level) . The formal requirement is 100 credit points, but up to 20 credit points can comprise Computer Science units taken as part of BE requirements.
  3. Must complete 160 credit points of Engineering units. However, to avoid anomalies, students may choose to reduce the credit points of Engineering to as low as 144 and make up the required total with additional Commerce units. In effect, students may choose to operate under the new (2005) rules as far as Engineering requirements are concerned. In short, the Commerce/Engineering ratio may vary from 80/160 to 96/144.
  4. Must complete ACCT1001, ACCT1002, ECON1001, ECON1002 and Econometrics 1B.
  5. Must complete Econometrics 1A if they have not completed MATH1005 Statistics. If they have, they should not attempt Econometrics 1A, since it is prohibited with MATH1005, but complete an alternative 6 credit points of Commerce instead.
  6. Must complete a Commerce major consisting, under the old rules, of 44 credit points, but need not complete a minor. The dropping of the requirement for a minor is a significant relaxation of the rules.
